Anti-Aging Nutrition Tips

  • Eat LessResearch has shown that eating fewer calories has many health benefits.  If you want to stay young longer, you should aim to eat only about 80 – 90% of the calories you need.  This means that you eat till you stop feeling hungry, not till you fill full. This will help your brain stay young, improve your memory and other cognitive functions and delay the onset of diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and other conditions usually associated with aging.

  • Eat Colour: Colourful fruits and vegetables contain many nutrients that are vital to anti-aging. Here is a list of foods recommended by the American Institute for Cancer Research  to prevent this dreaded disease.  It is important to realize that no foods work alone.  You should eat a wide variety as it is the synergistic effect of different compounds working together that helps you stay young longer.

  • Eat At Leisure:  How you eat is almost as important as what you eat.  Eating at a leisurely pace allows you to enjoy your food more.  It allows you to savour the flavour of the food and gives your stomach time to signal when it is full.  If you gobble down your food, you are more likely to overeat. There is evidence to support the idea that eating slowly helps you lose weight and stay young longer.  Read this article Slow Eating May Prevent Weight Gain  for more information.

Anti-Aging Social Tips

  • Social Relationships:  We all need other people.  No one can live alone in isolation; babies can actually lose the will to live if deprived of social contact. Read this article Isolation – The Ultimate Poison  for more information.  Social relationships not only help you stay young, they also affect your mental and physical health.  Social relationships help us feel connected to others. • Volunteering Your Time:  You may be at that time in your life when you have fewer family and work commitments.  Your children are grown and your career has stabilized.  A good way to build greater social relationships is to volunteer your time at non-profit organizations.  The trick is to choose the organization whose values are the same as yours.  Not all non-profits treat their volunteers the same.  Not all volunteers do it for the same reasons as you.  If you find the correct fit then volunteering is a great way to stay young longer.  You can also volunteer at organizations that will teach you new skills.

  • Regular Exercise:  Research on mice has shown that regular exercise reduced or eliminated many of the detrimental effects of aging in mice.  Read more here. Before starting any exercise program, please get a health check-up.  To exercise safely, start with low impact exercises like walking, swimming, yoga and calisthenics or isometric exercises.  As you get stronger, alternate with short periods of aerobic exercises like walking faster.  The most important thing is to find a routine that you can incorporate into your daily life.
